James Phonzo Adams, 98, passed away Thursday. December 7, in
Bloomington. James was born December 2, 1913 in Owensboro,
Kentucky, to his parents Joseph P. and Flora Belle Adams. James was
raised, after his father's early death, by his Uncle and Aunt,
James Urban and Ida Mae Adams, in Daviess County Kentucky. He
attended high school in Camden Tennessee then enrolled in the
Civilian Conservation Corps in that state. He returned to Owensboro
and worked at the KenRad radio tube plant prior to the Second World
War. During the war he worked as an inspector at a Sherman
Tank manufacturing plant in Granite City, Illinois. He was a
Georgia Life insurance agent for many years in Louisville, Kentucky
and managed movie theaters in Louisville and Greenwood Indiana
prior to retiring. James thoroughly enjoyed working as an usher at
Indiana University Basketball and Football games during his post
retirement years in Bloomington. His life was blessed by thirty
three years of companionship by Dora Moore of Bloomington. He was
thankful for the love, kindness and assistance of Dora's Children,
Rita, Jenie, Glenda, Wayne and Larry, and delighted by the presence
of Dora's grand-daughters Kerrie, Sheri, and Kirstin.
He was preceded in death by his brother Hugh A. Adams. He is
survived by his half-sister Margaret Wilmseg, and half-brother
Monroe Davis.
He is survived by Daughter Charlene Battle, and Sons James D.,
Terry D., and John C. Adams, grandchildren James Adams,
David Adams, Charlene Kalck, Leah Mangue, Sheri Adams, Sarah
Bednar, Grant Adams, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Adams, and Charles
Adams; great-grandchildren: Buddy Kalck, Trevor Kalck, Ashley
Kalck, Holly Kalck, Vincent Mangue, Ryan Bednar, Fallon
Jameson, and Trinity Bednar.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at the Allen
Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old St. Rd. 37 in Bloomington from 11:00 a.m.
until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13th with services at 2
PM. Rev. Bruce Bond will officiate. Burial will be at the
Springville West Cemetery in Lawrence County. Online condolences
