Lyle H. Calkins, a loving family man, entrepreneur and avid outdoorsman, passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Bloomington, Indiana. Born on Valentine’s Day 1925 to Lillian and Homer Calkins in Clarion, Iowa, Lyle served a tour in the U.S. Navy before moving with his family to Michigan City, Indiana. It was there that he met Anita, his wife of 63 years. They had three children. Lyle’s professional life began with a summer job as a lineman at Indiana Bell. He remained with the company and, over the course of 35 years, rose to the position of District Manager for southern Indiana. Along the way, the career took his family to several central and southern Indiana towns. Lyle later accepted a sales position with Staley Enterprises, a Birmingham, Alabama, company that made safety products for outside cable instillation. He was named president of the company within a year and served in that position for two more years. In the mid 1980s, Lyle and Anita returned to Bloomington to be near their young grandchildren. There, Lyle joined Internal Medicine Associates as business manager. He so enjoyed working with a physician practice that he started his own medical billing and consulting firm, Medical Management Services, and eventually provided office management and billing services to more than two dozen Bloomington-area physicians. He left the business in 1998 and continued to pursue independent consulting projects. Upon retirement Lyle built their vacation home on Lamb Lake and loved spending time there until his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease limited his activity. An outdoorsman, Lyle enjoyed boating, fishing, camping and hunting. He regularly exercised and was a longtime member of the YMCA. Lyle was very close to his grandchildren and took great pleasure in following their various school and extra-curricular activities. Lyle leaves behind his wife, Anita Calkins; a brother, Ray Calkins of Dallas, Texas, and his wife, Doris; two daughters, Carla Flores of Martinsville and her husband, Hector, and Lisa Quigley of Bloomington and her husband, Terry; his son, David Calkins of Bloomington and his wife, Elizabeth Elkas; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Eileen (Lewis) Osborn. Visitation and a funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at First United Methodist Church in Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 PM and the funeral service will follow at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Monroe County YMCA or the Barbara B. Jordan YMCA in Martinsville. Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old Highway 37 is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenfuneralhome.org
